KATHMANDU (March 9, 2008)— The Press Council Nep al is undertaking a nationwide Media Monitoring Program (MMP) for CA election. The program started on March 9, 2008.
MMP began on the request of Election Commission (EC). The program, which will run until the completion of the historic election process, is supported by Foundation Open Society Institute, Switzerland (FOSI) and UK Department for International Development-Nepal (DFID-Nepal).
MMP monitors television channels, radio stations and newspapers across the country. The headquarters of the Media Monitoring Program (MMP) is based in Kathmandu. Media Monitors are working throughout the country to cover 8 television channels, 58 radio stations and 151 newspapers. Regional media monitoring centers have been established in Birtamod, Biratnagar, Janakpur, Birgunj, Butwal, Bharatpur, Nepalgunj, Dang, and Dhangadi.
This is the first time that PCN, which routinely monitors print media, has undertaken to monitor print as well as broadcast media to assess the tone and characteristics of nationwide media coverage of elections.
MMP Director Dr. Dharma Adhikari is leading a team of some 100 media monitors and staff members, who are working day and night, to analyze the content of the media and report on the compliance of Election Commission's Media Code of Conduct for CA Election 2008 that came into effect on March 09, 2008.
